Cali M. Banks

Cali M. Banks is an artist based in Syracuse, NY. She holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Media Arts Practices from the University of Colorado Boulder. Cali works for Light Work, and is an Adjunct Professor for Syracuse University, Indiana University, and Pratt Institute’s Munson campus. Cali is also a 2024 En Foco Photography Fellow, and an upcoming Workspace Artist-in-Residence for Penumbra Foundation.

Banks plans to create a personal, experimental documentary project that explores the significance of intimacy by analyzing her connections with childhood friends, family members and romantic partners. This work will also touch on how feminine intimacy has been historically used against women, and more specifically, how women of colors' relationships are seemingly untold. And furthermore, how American indigenous women were seen as eroticized threats to men from the beginning of colonization. This project will be used as a return to the body as a source of knowledge and experience - the integral aspect to Banks’ auto-ethnographic research practice.
